Hi! I have a 3 month old Maine Coon kitten coming in a few weeks. New cat mom here!
My thought process was to eventually get him on a dry food free feed with a wet lunch/dinner for hydration. Does anyone do this? I'm a first responder so my schedule can sometimes change unexpectedly which is why I feel I need the dry food. Anyone use this method? Any suggestions on portion sizes?

My kitten came with purina dry kitten food the breeder was feeding her. It's garbage. But not knowing any better I bought two bags of it. Then doing more research I bought Nutro for kittens which is only a tad better (according to catfooddb.com) Purina 4 stars out of ten, Nutro 5 stars out of ten. So right now I am mixing a few spoonfuls of both with some Wellness Core Kitten wet food. It scores 8/10 on catfooddb.com
The only wet food for kittens that I saw ranked 9 out of 10 was Instinct something or other. However it's always out of stock here in North York, Ontario, and Wellness Core kitten usually is too. Then you can get price gouged ordering WC kitten on amazon. I ONLY use some dry food for help with tooth cleaning/scraping.
I free feed kibble, and give my kitten a 3oz can of Wellness Core, or Merrick pate, 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the evening. I add a little water to the canned food, too. She gobbles it up!

I used to work a rather crazy, random hospital hour job, so I really feel where you are coming from. At some point I did a very similar routine as to the one you are asking about. What worked for me was giving my cat wet food before I'd leave for work (mixed with a little water for maximum hydration) and using a water fountain to induce drinking. The reason for the extra water intake was to offset the dryness caused by the free feeding of dry foods. I also used one of the automatic feeders that let me portion how much was being dispensed, so she wouldn't overeat. Hope this helps!

Hi. I've always used wet and dry food for my cats. They won't eat the wet food unless I mix it with water, which is great because thats the main reason I feed both, to make sure they're getting extra fluids daily. They free feed the dry food throughout the day and I make a broth for them out of the wet food in the morning and evening. Since they won't eat the food itself, and normally drink all the juice, about 1/4 cup or more , I only use 1/4 of a half of a can per cat. Whatever they don't finish, I add more water to the meat and leave it near their dry food and they normally finish it before the next serving at dinner time. Hope this helps!
