My cat keeps licking the base of her tail near her but. She seems to be ok and no ill effects from it. She is peeing and pooping normally and eating normally and plays. We have alot of interaction with her and she is well taken care of. Litter box is cleaned 2 sometimes 3 times a day when needed. I change it out at least once a month. I do not know if this could be from dander or if she has other issues. Thank you
Hi Ellen, if everything else appears normal and you can't see anything back there, it is possible your kitty may have full anal sacs that are causing her a bother. They are little sacs on either side of the rectum that normally express with bowel movements. Sometimes they don't express properly and fill up, causing some discomfort that some cats may try to relieve with excessive licking. While I can't guarantee that's the case, I think it would be worth taking your kitty to your veterinarian to have the anal sacs checked. Sometimes, as long as you've been seen for an exam in the last year, they may let you schedule just a quick visit with a tech or nurse to check them.
