About Supreme Source
Supreme Source is made by American Pet Nutrition. American Pet Nutrition is a family-owned business that has been making pet food and treats since 1972. Along with making their own products, American Pet Nutrition has a long history of co-packing or manufacturing products for other pet food companies. This is a common practice in the pet food industry with companies that have large manufacturing facilities.
According to information from 2017, American Pet Nutrition (also known as American Nutrition anibrands.com) was one of the five largest dry pet food co-packers in the U.S. They make their own brands (including dog food): VitaBone®, Supreme Source®, Beggar Dog®, Atta Boy!®, Atta Cat!®, and Maintain Chunks®. It’s harder to find the foods they co-pack these days but in the past they have produced Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Blue Buffalo and WellPet.
Sourcing and Manufacturing
Supreme Source is made by American Pet Nutrition which has facilities in Ogden, Utah, and in Pennsylvania. According to the company, they oversee every aspect of formulating sourcing, producing, and packaging their products.
Supreme Source refers customers to the American Pet Nutrition web site for more information about their ingredients and production processes but there is no more information there. There is only a way to contact the company.
Information for American Nutrition (the other name for American Pet Nutrition) states that they exceed FDA, AAFCO, and USDA industry-wide standards and are Safe Quality Food (SQF) Level III Certified by the Global Food Safety Initiative. They have a Food Safety Plan in place to monitor their facilities and processes.
However, American Nutrition was one of the many companies caught up in the 2007 melamine problems with contaminated pet foods through Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Blue Buffalo, and a few other foods.
Much of the current information about Supreme Source and American Pet Nutrition is missing including where their meat and other ingredients are sourced.
American Nutrition/American Pet Nutrition does have an overall positive reputation in the pet food industry.
Has Supreme Source Cat Food Been Recalled?
We didn’t find any recalls relating to Supreme Source cat food. However, we did find some recalls for products made by American Nutrition/American Pet Nutrition in 2007 (melamine recalls for Blue Buffalo and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul – Diamond products). We also found a 2009 recall for peanut butter dog biscuits.
It’s hard to judge how to weigh these recalls since American Nutrition/American Pet Nutrition is one of the biggest co-packers in the United States, making pet foods and treats for other companies. Overall, the company has had a good manufacturing and recall record for nearly 50 years.

Positive Reviews
“My cats will eat anything dry like it is candy, so eating this isnt an issue. I wanted to get something that I was sure was healthy, no corn etc. This smells more like real food. It is like they avoided adding in fishy extreme smells and just stuck with real ingredients. No science to that but they did eat it all and at least leaves a human being with a good impression as to the healthy aspect of the food.” – by orlandomike on Oct 29, 2019
“My cat has a sensitive stomach and can’t digest the popular brands of cat food very well. Every other week I’ll find her throw up or poop around the house, but since switching to Supreme Source, she hasn’t had those issues. I’m thinking because its grain free and on the healthier side. If it makes my cat happy, I’ll stick with this brand. :)” – by Victoria on Apr 11, 2021
Negative Reviews
“My cats will eat it but I can tell they don’t love it. They just kind of snack on it instead of eating it as a meal. I’ll use up this bag but won’t buy it again.”- by nope on May 27, 2019
“My cats will not only refuse this food, but will also avoid the other food dishes when out.”- by Willow on Jan 31, 2020
How Much Does Supreme Source Cat Food Cost?
Supreme Source cat food is modestly priced. On Chewy.com, a 3-lb bag of the whitefish formula is $10.93. An 11-lb bag costs $29.15. The costs are slightly less with autoship.
The chicken formula is a little higher. A 3-lb bag of the chicken recipe costs $11.76 while an 11-lb bag costs $30.18. Both are a little lower with autoship. No real explanation for the difference in price between these two very similar formulas.
Overall, Is Supreme Source Cat Food a Good Choice?
Yes, we think these two dry Supreme Source cat foods are good foods. They are free of wheat, corn, soy, and artificial colors and flavors. Both recipes feature good meat protein from named sources. The use of seaweed containing nutrients that appear to be good for a cat’s digestion is also a benefit.
There are a few ingredients that we could do without such as the peas, chickpeas, and lentils but, overall, these appear to be good dry cat foods.
