Boxiecat Cat Litter has several different options in their line of litters to choose from, including the Boxiecat Air and Boxiecat Pro varieties. But for this review, we will be focusing on their Gently Scented, Extra Strength Unscented and Premium Unscented formulas.

The Boxiecat litters in this review are all made from natural clay and all have a high absorbency rate regardless of whether it’s a scented or unscented variety. These clay litter formulas that we tested all did a very good job with odor control as well as having very little dust when pouring and scooping.

Also, Boxiecat’s clay formula was designed so that it clumps as flat tops, making it easier to scoop while also preventing clumps from soaking into the bottom of your litter box.

Another attractive aspect of Boxiecat is that they have donated hundreds of thousands of pounds of their litter to animal shelters throughout America over the years. According to their website, Boxiecat litter has been donated and used in shelters in all 50 United States.

Another variety of Boxiecat Litter is the Extra Strength Unscented formula. Michael Vogelsang / Cats.com

As for its benefits for cats, Boxiecat was developed to be either scented or unscented while maintaining odor control, as well as forming hard clumps on the top of the litter box, as opposed to allowing urine and feces to soak into the bottom.

A third variety of Boxiecat Litter is the Premium Unscented formula. Michael Vogelsang / Cats.com

It’s virtually dust-free when pouring and almost completely dust-free when scooping, and there was also very little tracking outside of the litter box.

What Kinds Of Litter Does The Brand Offer?

Boxiecat Litter offers several varieties which are typically unscented or lightly scented. For this review, we focused on three varieties of their clay litters which are made using the same manufacturing process, but with slightly different methods of odor control and scents.

Two of the litters that we reviewed are unscented, and the third is gently scented. And, all of these litters are clumping formulas.

All of these Boxiecat litter formulas offer the following benefits:

  • Made from all-natural ingredients
  • Dust-free formula
  • Highly Absorbent
  • Clumping
  • Easily Scoopable

These clay litters have a uniqueness in that they are made from all-natural ingredients with no added dyes, chemical scents, masking agents, bleach or filler ingredients. Also, since their litter and packaging is all manufactured in the USA, Boxiecat claims that this helps them to keep a closer eye on their quality control.

Some benefits to Boxiecat litter are that it is dust-free, it’s highly absorbent and clumps very quickly, and it traps urine on the top of the litter box as opposed to it soaking through to the bottom. Also, even though these are unscented or lightly scented formulas, they still all did a very good job with odor control, even after several days of use in a multi-cat home.

With urine and feces, Boxiecat did a great job with absorption and clumping for all of their varieties. And, Boxiecat is a competitively affordable and cost-effective option for cat litter. Depending on how many cats you have, one bag can last up to one month per cat.

The granules of Boxiecat Gently Scented Litter seem average in size compared to other litters on the market, and even though there was a tiny bit of dust when pouring, there was literally no dust when scooping. Also, it’s high-absorbency is designed to create flat-top clumps which don’t break or crumble when scooping.

With that in mind, the light scent is almost unnoticeable to humans, but it still managed to do a very good job with immediate and long-lasting odor control. Since this is a clumping formula, it’s easy to spot when it’s time to clean the litter box, and it should be done at least once daily if not more to alleviate any odors.

Positive Reviews

“Loving the Boxiecat litter. After doing lots of research I decided to try this litter first with my new kitten. It has been everything I wanted in a litter. The box is in our very small bathroom for right now and I have never smelt the box while in there. Produces very low dust and I’m also not having a real issue with tracking. I will continue to buy this again and again. The scent is also very pleasant and not over-bearing.” –Dana, reviewing Boxiecat Gently Scented Litter

“This litter is great. It’s the first litter I’ve used that has no dust and very little tracking. My cats kick litter everywhere, but it stays contained to the area by the box. I also have a cat with long hair and she has no issues with this litter getting stuck to her fur. It’s easy to clean and the clumps don’t break easily so it stays cleaner longer than other litters I’ve used.” –Litter Girl, reviewing Boxiecat Extra Strength Unscented Litter

“I’ve been using this litter for about 6 or 7 months now and it is the best. I have a 13 year old Snow Bengal who weighs 15 pounds and a 3 year old Ragdoll and Persian mix weighing maybe 8 pounds. I have 2 large boxes and they are cleaned daily. Never any odor and they stay pretty clean.” –Marty, reviewing Boxiecat Premium Unscented Litter

Negative Reviews

“I was excited to try out this litter based on the other reviews. My biggest disappointment is although this litter claims to be 99.9% dust free, it is not. As soon as I started pouring it into the litter box a cloud of dust formed. It is just as dusty as the litter I previously used. I’m not satisfied at all.” –Catmom8, reviewing Boxiecat Gently Scented Litter

“I don’t think the people who have reviewed this product have ever tried anything else, because this is the worst litter I have ever used. It’s incredibly dusty despite their claim, you can actually see the plumes of dust when you’re as gently as possible sifting the clumps out. Odor control was OK for urine, bad for feces.” –Mikki, reviewing Boxiecat Extra Strength Unscented Litter

“This is dust free which is very important to me and my cats really like clay litter so I’m trying to find a good one for them. This one is very disappointing because on day 3 it already has a bad odor and I have to change the litter boxes again. It does not clump well. I scoop up the clump and many small pieces crumble and are left behind.” –Twomainecoon, reviewing Boxiecat Premium Unscented Litter

How Much Does Boxiecat Litter Cost?

All three Boxiecat litters that we reviewed have mid-range price-points compared to a lot of other litters on the market. It may seem a little more expensive than many other clay litters available, but its long-lasting usage definitely helps to make it a decent value overall.

The litter varieties that we reviewed are very similar in price, with the Gently Scented formula being $1.15 per pound, the Extra Strength formula being $1.10 per pound, and the Premium Unscented formula being $1.09 per pound.

Overall, Is Boxiecat Litter A Good Choice?

We have a lot of very positive things to say about all three Boxiecat litters that we reviewed. In the end, all three varieties did very well with only a few, minor downsides. And, keep in mind that the downsides really all depend on your personal preferences when it comes to cat litter.

Among all three Boxiecat litters, the only major differences were with the scents, or lack thereof. Regardless of whether it’s the lightly scented formula, or one of the unscented formulas, they all have the same properties as far as absorbency, scoopability, low amount of dust, granule size, and low amount of tracking outside of the litter box.

That being said, be mindful of what scents (or lack of scents) might work best for you and your cats, how much you want to spend on your litter, and which ingredients are a priority to you.

      I appreciate your feedback!
Like you? I have tried several litters.
Some are ‘okay’. The worst in my experience & in my opinion, is Arm & Hammer Slide
(Unscented). It is dusty and heavily reeks of ‘something’ despite being ‘unscented’.
And the litter just crumbles apart making it hard to keep their box …their litter clean/free of urine remnants!! I just washed out their boxes tonight & starting with fresh litter. Boxie Cat.

Have switched to Boxiecat and although a little more expensive it is much less dusty than other brands as well it clumps really well so you can scoop it easier and therefore you leave less remaining in the box. I find this extends the life of the litter and therefore the cost is worth it. We have two cats and four boxes which I clean every day to two days. I have been the cat box cleaner for 40 years so I am speaking from experience!
