About Kitzy Cat Food

Kitzy is owned and produced by Amazon. It’s an online-only brand that comes in both wet food and dry food varieties. Kitzy cat food is made with “real” meat and doesn’t contain any added corn, wheat, soy, or artificial colors or flavors.

As an Amazon-owned brand, Kitzy is marketed as an affordable option for cat owners. Kitzy even goes one step further to offer the 1-year Kitzy Guarantee. They’ll refund your purchase up to 12 months after the fact if you’re not completely satisfied.

Kitzy cat food is a convenience and affordable option, but is it the right choice for your cat? Let’s take a closer look at the products to find out.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

Kitzy is owned by Amazon and is made in the USA. Amazon says that Kitzy dry cat food is made in a family-owned facility in Arkansas “with high-quality ingredients from around the world.”

Amazon notes that Kitzy wet cat food is also made in the USA with globally sourced ingredients but it’s unclear whether they’re made in the same Arkansas facilities as their dry food formulas.

Recall History

This brand offers both paté-style and minced canned foods, sold in 3-ounce or 5.5-ounce cans. There are also two recipes of wet cat food toppers sold in 3-ounce pouches. Kitzy wet cat food recipes are sold in single recipe cases as well as variety packs.

  • Chicken Entrée Minced in Gravy
  • Salmon Entrée Minced in Gravy
  • Turkey Recipe Paté
  • Salmon Recipe Paté
  • Chicken Recipe Paté
  • Chicken & Rice Recipe Paté

All of Kitzy’s cat foods are made with animal protein as the first ingredient. Both dry food formulas are grain-free but Kitzy offers both grain-free and grain-inclusive wet food recipes.

What Do Customers Think of Kitzy Cat Food?

Customers love the affordable price tag of Kitzy foods and most products have at least a 4-star rating on Amazon. Based on the total number of reviews, Kitzy dry foods appear to be significantly more popular than their wet food products with over 4,800 reviews versus fewer than 50.

Numerous cat owners comment on the quality of the ingredients and the supposed highly appealing aroma and flavor of the food. There are, however, a few complaints that the odor can be unpleasantly strong for human noses.

Let’s take a look at a few reviews from some of the most popular recipes from Kitzy.

Positive Reviews

“Well, when it comes to cat food, I have to let my cats decided. I have three kitties, ages 3, 4, and 10. They all like it. I am shocked. They all have their preferences, and so I have various types of food available based on that (I am well trained). One only eats pate, one only eats “extra wet” food, and one only eats the gravy off the gravy type foods.

This is more like an “extra wet” style of food. Accurately described as “minced in gravy”. Not exactly a pate, but not exactly a gravy style (the kind that is usually a loose gravy with chunks of stuff). This is more like the consistency of flaked tuna, but smaller bits, with loads of moisture. Anyway, something about it appeals to my entire gang. No barfs either.” – by Precise Disarray reviewing Kitzy Wild Caught Tuna Wet Cat Food on June 5, 2022

“We weren’t able to try this right away because we were finishing up her other bag of food. But the kitty knew this bag was in the hall and assumed it was probably for her and she wanted us all to know it. Every time she came into the house, she rubbed her face on it while making aggressively eye contact. THIS IS MINE. MY FOOD. MINE. NOBODY BETTER EAT THIS. I CLAIM IT AS MINE.

As soon as we opened it, she loafed in front of her bowl and ate the food. All of it. My cat food reviews are pretty simple. If my picky, spoiled excuse for a cat loves the food, it gets 5 stars because she won’t eat a lot of what we’ve tried to get her in stores (i.e. the cheap stuff that actually goes on sale). The ingredients of this one seems pretty great and I suspect that’s probably why my cat likes it.” – by Nenia Campbell reviewing Kitzy Turkey & Pea Recipe Dry Cat Food November 14, 2020

Negative Reviews

“This is a particularly gross-looking wet cat food, if I’m being honest, but hey— I’m not the one eating it so who am I to judge? Well, shockingly, my cats (my little vaccuum-eaters who can’t wait for their morning wet food)….won’t touch the stuff. Both recoil and do the “bury it” paw gesture. No amount of waiting changes their minds. They would literally prefer not to eat than have this. I’ve tried now five times over the past 10 days to see if maybe they just needed to acclimate but…nope. The other varieties and brands of cat food, they dive right into. This salmon brand earns me looks of betrayal.” – by JupiterS12 reviewing Kitzy Turkey Recipe Pate Canned Food on September 19, 2021

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

To test Kitzy cat food, I ordered a 4-pound bag of both dry food options and a variety pack of tuna-based canned foods. I was able to test all of the foods with two of my cats but the third, Biscuit, could only taste the wet food because she is allergic to chicken.

As several customers have mentioned, I did notice that the wet food had a strong aroma, but it was one my cats seemed to like. I also agree that the “minced in gravy” foods are more shredded, but it probably has to do with the protein being fish rather than meat. Regardless, my cats devoured it and my dog Archie was happy to finish off the can when it got knocked onto the floor.

My cats were less interested in the dry food. One thing worth noting is that the kibbles are smaller than average, so Kitzy dry food might be a good option for kittens.

#1 Kitzy Turkey and Pea Recipe Dry Cat Food

Turkey appears to be the primary source of protein in this recipe.

High-quality sources of animal protein top the list of ingredients in this dry food. The primary source of added fat is animal-based as well, though it’s vaguely named as “poultry fat.” I’d prefer to see a named source like chicken fat because it’s hard to judge the source and quality of vaguely named ingredients.

Peas are another main ingredient in this formula. They’re a starchy plant ingredient that may contribute to the protein content of the formula. Peas and other legumes can be difficult for cats to digest, and it doesn’t help that there are numerous other plant ingredients listed.

It’s not surprising that the total carb content of this recipe is very high given that it’s a pretty cheap dry cat food. It is, however, free from low-value grains like corn, wheat, and soy, and it doesn’t contain any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Overall, this dry food recipe is moderately high in protein with moderate fat and very high carbohydrate content. It contains about 361 calories per cup.

#2 Kitzy Tuna Entrée Minced in Gravy High-Protein Canned Cat Food

Tuna appears to be the primary source of protein in this recipe.

This wet food formula is made with tuna as a single source of high-quality animal protein and fish broth provides both moisture and flavor. The other two main ingredients, however, are plant-based.

Sunflower oil is the primary source of added fat and tapioca starch is added for thickness and texture. Guar gum is also a starchy plant additive used to improve the product’s consistency and as a source of fiber. While guar gum may contribute to gastrointestinal upset in some cats, it’s generally considered a safer thickening ingredient than carrageenan which is found in many cheap wet foods.

Given its short list of ingredients and single protein, this formula could be a good option for cats with food allergies and sensitivities. It should be fairly digestible, though it’s higher in fiber than cats really need. This could contribute to digestive difficulties in some cats.

Overall, this dry food recipe is high in protein with low fat and moderate carbohydrate content. It contains about 143 calories per 5.5-ounce can.

#3 Kitzy Whitefish and Pea Recipe Dry Cat Food

Whitefish appears to be the primary source of protein in this recipe.

This recipe starts off strong with four of the first five ingredients being high-quality sources of animal protein. It’s a primarily fish-based recipe made with whitefish and menhaden fish meal. Whitefish is not a specific type of fish, but a generic term used for various species of white-fleshed fish.

The main source of added fat in this formula is poultry fat. While this ingredient is animal-based, it’s vaguely named, so it’s difficult to judge either the origins or quality.

In addition to five animal ingredients, this recipe contains a handful of plant ingredients, mostly starchy additions like peas and tapioca. It also contains pea protein, a concentrated source of plant protein which is less biologically valuable for cats than animal proteins.

The total carbohydrate content of this formula is very high, though that’s typical for dry foods. It’s also worth noting that no dry food provides the water your cat needs, so it’s best to supplement your cat’s moisture intake elsewhere in his diet.

Overall, this dry food recipe is fairly high in protein with moderate fat and very high carbohydrate content. It contains about 382 calories per cup.

How Much Does Kitzy Cat Food Cost?

One of the main draws of Kitzy cat food is its affordability. Both dry food formulas are priced under $15 for a 4-pound bag which averages to about $0.21 per ounce. You can save even more by purchasing a 12-pound bag for around $30 which brings the price down to $0.15 per ounce.

Kitzy wet foods cost $23.75 for a 24-pack of 5.5-ounce cans or $17.08 for a 24-pack of 3-ounce cans. The per-ounce price ranges from $0.18 to $0.24.

To feed a 10-pound cat Kitzy dry food would cost about $0.43 per day and, for wet food, it would cost between $1.38 and $1.60 per day. This puts Kitzy in a similar price range as familiar brands like Wellness and Nulo.

Overall, Is Kitzy Cat Food a Good Choice?

Kitzy is an affordable cat food brand that offers fairly high ingredient quality and a decent selection of wet foods, though their dry food options are very limited.

As an Amazon-owned brand, customer support may leave something to be desired in terms of product quality itself. Customer concerns are handled by Amazon representatives who may not have any specific knowledge about the products or about pet nutrition.

If you’re on a budget but don’t want to feed your cat something loaded with by-products and artificial additives, Kitzy could be a good choice. The carb content is too high to call this brand species-appropriate, but the foods don’t contain red flag ingredients and cats seem to like them.

Where Is Kitzy Cat Food Sold?

Because Kitzy is an Amazon-owned brand, the food is only available to purchase online at Amazon.com.

Hello & thank you so much for all you do for our furry felines. Which of the Kitzy canned foods have the lowest or acceptable amount of carbs? My cats really enjoy the chicken & tuna minced with gravy but I do not like the higher carb content. Until this they’ve never had anything but pate. The really love the kitzy kitten chicken too. It’s so convenient & with no soy, grains & no artificial colors & especially No caragenon, I’d really appreciate it if you could guide me to the lowest carb option they offer! Thank you so very much! 🐱 PS Forgive typos!

Cats no longer will touch this wet food. In the 13 months I’ve had a cat it’s the 1st food they absolutely won’t touch. I wish I could remove my previous statement saying my cats enjoyed it. That was one single day & has not been repeated. This food is crazy inexpensive right now. Like $1 for 5.5 ounces. I wish they liked it because I like to buy in bulk with prices like that.

I NEED THE CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT OF THE GRAIN-FREE, WET MITZI FOODS PROCESSED WITH “GROUND FAX SEED;” NOT ANY OF THE HIGH PROTEIN ONES. THEY ARE PROCESSED WITH TAPIOCA STARCH,
YOU SEE, MY CAT IS DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES.

If you google cat food carbohydrate calculator it will do the math for you. You use the guaranteed analysis on the can of cat food. Remember those are only minimum & maximums & not exact. I found them helpful & give a decent estimate. With wet foods I’ve found they most often contain more protein than the minimum…usually much more. Keep that in mind. That will make the carb # actually lower. As far as I know only the manufacturer can give you the exact # of carbs & I’ve found most companies are happy to share. Unfortunately in my experience Kitzy is not one to share. If I have time I’ll do the math for you & give you an estimate. Sometimes foods with tapioca starch still end up being 5% or less. I suppose depending on how much is used. As I mentioned my cats don’t like Kitzy….unfortunately because it’s soooo cheap with decent ingredients. Good luck! Happy Caterday! 🙂

Rudolph, btw.,Since carb content is a common question you can often go to chewy or Amazon & look up a specific product. Look in the question section & you’ll often find someone else has asked & many times you can see a response from the manufacturer. You may also ask your own question there but of course Kitzy is only available on Amazon. Thought that might help you in the future. Right now 5.5 ounces are less than a buck a piece

Hi, I really appreciate your work so, first of all thank you… i noticed that your test review says, ” One thing worth noting is that the kibbles are smaller than average, so Kitzy dry food might be a good option for kittens.” Please correct this as kittens can not be fed adult cat food at all if they are to grow and thrive. Thanks, K
