Why Trust Cats.com

Having reviewed dozens of brands and hundreds of individual recipes, I’ve gained a lot of experience evaluating cat food and treats. I’ve also had over 12 years of experience learning about my own cats’ preferences in this area.

To test Pet Greens cat treats, I ordered two flavors of Cat Craves semi-moist treats and a self-grow cat grass kit. I tested the treats with my three cats (Bagel, Munchkin, and Biscuit) and grew the cat grass over a 7-day period.

During testing, I gauged my cats’ interest in the treats and cat grass. I also made observations about the products’ appearance, smell, texture, and general appeal. Finally, I conducted an in-depth analysis of the products using information from the product labels and compared them to the Cats.com Standard.

About Pet Greens

Pet Greens was founded in 1996 by Catherine, a Southern California native, and her New Zealander brother-in-law, Marty. They combined their interests in health food to create a line of pet treats that harness the nutritional power of wheatgrass.

Pet Greens originally became known for selling fresh, live greens including wheatgrass (marketed as cat grass) and catnip. These products are available in select retail pet stores and online at Amazon.com. The company also offers self-grow kits which include everything pet owners need to grow cat grass at home.

More recently, Pet Greens has expanded its product offerings to include a line of chewy cat treats. The Cat Craves line of cat treats features wheatgrass to deliver a gentle dose of fiber and nutrients.

In cooperation with Bell Rock Growers, Pet Greens works to support small animal rescue organizations around the United States. They offer a form on their website rescues can fill out to request a donation of Pet Greens products.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

Pet Greens is based in San Marcos, California, owned by Bell Rock Growers, a family-owned and -operated farm. The organic wheatgrass and other grasses used in Pet Greens pregrown grass and self-grow kits are sourced from Bell Rock Growers.

The Cat Craves line of cat treats is made in the United States. Pet Greens doesn’t specify where the ingredients come from and neither do they state the name of the manufacturer. The FAQ section of the website only says that the products are made in the USA And the self-grow kits are assembled in either the US or Canada.

Recall History

Pet Greens’ primary product offering is their pregrown grasses and self-grow wheatgrass kits which aren’t subject to the same FDA regulations as pet food and treats. That said, Pet Greens Cat Craves treats have never been recalled.

What Kinds of Treats Does Pet Greens Offer?

All Pet Greens treats are formulated to highlight wheatgrass as the star ingredient. Commonly grown as “cat grass,” wheatgrass is a gentle source of fiber and nutrients for pets.

Pet Greens offers the following cat treat recipes:

  • Pet Greens Chicken Flavor Cat Craves
  • Pet Greens Salmon Flavor Cat Craves
  • Pet Greens Tuna Flavor Cat Craves
  • Pet Greens Turkey & Duck Flavor Cat Craves

In addition to chewy cat treats, Pet Greens offers a pouch in which customers can grow their own cat grass. The pouch comes pre-filled with dirt and comes with a packet of seeds. You tear off the top, add seeds and water, then watch them grow.

Pet Greens also sells pre-grown, certified organic cat grass and catnip. They’re grown in small cups and sold in major pet store chains like PetSmart and Petco. The same seeds are used for their self-grow cat grass kits.

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

To test Pet Greens products, I ordered two Cat Craves treat flavors and one self-grow cat grass kit. I placed my order through Chewy and it arrived quickly. The instructions for the self-grow kit were simple to follow and I had several inches of healthy grass in less than a week.

My cats seemed to enjoy Pet Greens cat treats. The round treats were appropriately sized for cats and mine seemed to find the chewy texture appealing.

#1 Pet Greens Cat Craves Deep Sea Tuna Semi-Moist Cat Treats

Formulated to support healthy digestion, these chewy cat treats are infused with fiber-rich wheatgrass powder. The first ingredient, however, is tuna—a rich source of animal protein and omega-3 fatty acids. While tuna provides most of the flavor, the treats also contain protein from chicken and dried egg.

It’s worth noting that the guaranteed analysis for these treats on Chewy doesn’t match what’s on the package or on the Pet Greens site. Using the package information, the treats contain about 15% protein and 6% fat, both measured as dry matter. In other words, these treats are incredibly high in carbohydrates.

Not only are Pet Greens cat treats very high-carb, but they contain a few ingredients that simply aren’t necessary for cats. Maple syrup, for example; cats don’t have taste receptors for sweetness. Most cats are lactose intolerant, as well, so the dried cheddar cheese is potentially problematic.

Ingredients

#2 Pet Greens Cat Craves Turkey & Duck Semi-Moist Cat Treats

Featuring turkey muscle meat as the first ingredient, this recipe also contains protein from duck, chicken, and egg. Fish oil provides animal-sourced omega-3s, though it doesn’t seem to be a main ingredient. The dry matter protein and fat content of these treats are 12.7% and about 8%, respectively.

Like the previous recipe, these turkey formula cat treats are very high in carbohydrates. They also contain the same maple syrup and dried cheddar cheese, as well as other starchy plant ingredients like rice flour, barley flour, and whole ground potatoes.

Though these wouldn’t be the first cat treats I chose on a nutritional basis, my cats enjoyed them, nonetheless. They liked the semi-moist texture and seemed to find the flavor appealing.

#3 Pet Greens Self-Grow Garden Pet Grass

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

$7.49 At Chewy

Comprised of 100% certified organic wheatgrass, this self-grow pet grass is a fresh and tasty treat for cats. The kit includes a pouch of dry soil and a packet of seeds—you simply follow the instructions to grow the grass yourself. Mine grew very quickly, sprouting in about 48 hours and growing several inches tall over the next few days.

It’s important to read the instructions with this kit. The first step involves poking holes in the bottom of the bag before opening it to drain the water. If you tear open the pouch before reading the instructions, things could get messy.

Be sure to give the seeds a few days to sprout in a cool, shady area. Don’t move the pouch into the sun until the majority of the seeds have sprouted and keep the soil slightly damp.

What Do Customers Think of Pet Greens Cat Treats?

On Amazon, Pet Greens cat treats have significantly more ratings – over 2,300. Though Pet Greens does have a handful of reviews on Consumer Affairs, none are more recent than 2017.

Positive Reviews

“This was a hit with all my cats! I hold my breath with each new treat I buy as they tend to turn their noses up at treats I think they’ll love, but I keep trying. They loved these right away.”
– By Mary J, Chewy.com, Reviewing Pet Greens Cat Craves Deep Sea Tuna Semi-Moist Cat Treats, on October 8th, 2022

“This quickly grew and I cut it to put on my cats’ food. They not only gobbled it up, the grass grew back tall and fast!” – By Ly, Chewy.com, Reviewing Pet Greens Self-Grow Garden Pet Grass, on June 26th, 2023

Both cat owners and their cats seem pleased with Pet Greens cat treats and self-grow pet grass kits. The treats appear to appeal to even picky eaters and they’re popular among senior cats for whom crunchy treats are a challenge. Customers overwhelmingly agree that the pet grass is very easy to grow.

Negative Reviews

“Cats smelled them and walked away, smelled awful to me also, too dry and hard. Maybe a quality control issue, bottom line good ingredients!” – By Princess59, Chewy.com, Reviewing Pet Greens Cat Craves Roasted Chicken Semi-Moist Cat Treats, on November 16th, 2022

“I planted these on Wednesday and still no results four days later. Maybe I got a bad batch, but no grass grew for me, just smelled up my apartment (started to smell like rotting eggs).” By sushinmoospetparent, Chewy.com, Reviewing Pet Greens Self-Grow Garden Pet Grass, on July 10th, 2022

Most negative reviews for Pet Greens Cat Craves treats are centered around cat preference. Some cats simply showed no interest in the treats, though a few customers reported issues with an off smell or dried-out product. Negative reviews of the cat grass were mixed between cats who were uninterested in the grass and buyers who couldn’t get the seeds to grow.

How Much Do Pet Greens Cat Treats Cost?

Compared to popular brands like Shameless Pets and Temptations, Pet Greens cat treats are fairly pricey. A 3-ounce bag may cost up to $8, depending on the recipe. Pricing for Pet Greens treats is similar to chewy treats from Tiki Cat.

Surprisingly, the Pet Greens Cat Craves chicken recipe is the most expensive at around $8.11 per bag. The Savory Salmon flavor starts at about $4.49 while the Turkey & Duck and Tuna flavors are both priced under $6.50.

Where Are Pet Greens Cat Treats Sold?

Pet Greens treats are widely available in stores and online. The best place to find Cat Craves treats in-store is in Petco or PetSmart locations. Online, you can purchase the entire Pet Greens product line on Amazon.com or Chewy.com.

While Chewy only sells Pet Greens’ self-grow pet grass kits, you can order a three-pack of pre-grown cat grass from Amazon.com. Otherwise, the best place to get Pet Greens pre-grown cat grass and catnip is in PetSmart or Petco stores.

My last 2 orders from Amazon were bad. I ordered the 3 pack twice now and both times the Pet Green treats were dried out. They were NOT soft and they smelled very bad. My cat would not eat them. I have ordered them from both Amazon and Chewy, I have received bad packages from both places.

I have now found out that the manufacture of the petgreens treats have changed their process. Which the treats are no longer soft and have a strong smell which my cat does not like. It’s not the fault of Amazon or Chewy, I don’t think they were aware of the change to the treats. But after I ordered well of a dozen packages of treats I contacted the company and was made aware of the change.
